I was running late, arms full of groceries, watching the elevator doors start to close from halfway down the hallway. A man inside reached out and held them — not impatiently, not with that little sigh people sometimes do. He just held them, looked at me, and said, “Take your time, no rush.” Then he actually meant it.

He didn’t check his phone or glance at the floor numbers while I caught my breath, shifted the bags, found my balance again. It was such a small thing. I thought about it the whole ride up, and a little after that too — how rare it is for someone to give you a moment without making you feel like you owe them for it.
Sometimes the kindest thing a stranger can do is make thirty extra seconds feel like nothing at all.
