A neighborhood cat started showing up on my front steps last fall, around the time everything in my life felt a little gray and unfinished. He never asked for anything — no meowing at the door, no scratching for food. He just sat there in the late afternoon sun while I drank my coffee, occasionally blinking slowly at me, like I was just another piece of the afternoon he happened to accept.

He never moved closer, but he never left either.
I never learned his name or whose porch he actually belonged to. He just seemed to know, in his quiet animal way, that I needed company that didn’t require conversation, explanation, or anything at all from me in return.
Some comfort doesn’t come with words. It just sits beside you, in the sun, until you feel a little less alone in your own afternoon.
