The Woman Reading in the Rain

It was drizzling outside the library and I was waiting under the overhang for it to let up, annoyed at myself for not checking the forecast. A woman came out behind me, opened her bag, found no umbrella, looked at the sky for a second, and then just walked into the rain without hurrying — book already open, reading as she went, completely unbothered by getting wet.

I watched her until she turned the corner. Something about her complete indifference to the inconvenience rearranged something small in me. I walked home in the rain too. It was fine. Some people are a reminder that most inconveniences are optional, once you decide to stop fighting them.
