Two years ago a Sunday with nothing scheduled would have made me anxious by noon. I’d start inventing productivity — reorganizing things that didn’t need reorganizing, emailing people who weren’t expecting to hear from me, anything to make the day feel justified. Rest felt like something I had to earn first.

Last Sunday I had nothing scheduled and I just let it be nothing. Made eggs slowly. Read for two hours without checking my phone. Took a walk with no destination and came back when I felt like it. At some point I realized I’d made it to four o’clock without once feeling like I should be doing something else instead. That felt, quietly, like progress.
Learning to rest without guilt doesn’t happen all at once. One day you just notice you forgot to feel bad about it.
