“The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”

The Week Nothing Significant Happened

I had a week last summer with no travel, no social commitments, no deadlines worth stressing over. By Wednesday I’d started feeling vaguely guilty about how quiet it was, like I was wasting something. I made a list of things I’d done: cooked three good meals, read most of a novel, took a long walk every afternoon, slept eight hours twice.

Nothing on the list was impressive. All of it had been genuinely good. I’ve started noticing the gap between what I think I need for a week to count and what actually makes one feel worthwhile. That gap is smaller than I used to believe. A week that restores you is not a week you wasted. Sometimes the quiet ones are the ones you actually needed.
